Corruption is not merely taking bribe in cash or kind, it is also the moral deterioration of the worst kind. In fact, corruption robs a person of his character, humane nature, value system and turns him into a cannibal. It is more serious a disease for a country than cancer. Breach of trust, misuse of official power, deviation from ethics etc all form part of corruption. Corruption creates social disorder, destroys faith in state, gives rise to injustice and above all it is a social crime.
Corruption has destroyed the basic fiber of many developing countries. It is like a termite. It makes a country hollow from within while outwardly it seems to be progressing.
The root cause of corruption to my mind is greed. Corruption flows down from top to bottom and is rampant in countries where the political system is corrupted. It gets ingrained into a person’s system so fast and so deep that it is next to impossible to eradicate it.
The greatest enemy of any country is not from outside but from within and it is corruption. Where corruption is rampant, everyone carries a price tag and hence it is impossible to keep country’s strategic secrets intact.
Terrorism is flourishing in countries where corruption is deep routed because the insiders can be purchased as their greed for money makes them insensitive to national interests.
India ranks in the first few in this regard. The corruption is so deep rooted here that only the notes can open any door that you may have to knock Long ago I had heard that late Mr Gulzari Lal Nanda who was the Home Minister at that time had worked out a draft to eradicate corruption. This draft was sent to the then Prime Minister Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru who was at that time somewhere in Darjeeling along with Jai Prakash Narain. After going through the draft Pt Nehru handed that over to Mr Narain. who had a hearty laugh after reading it. On asking by Pt Nehru, he said, ' I can take a vow not to accept it but if I have to get my work done, I have no choice but to pay.' This was more than four decades ago. It has now spread its roots all around and in every field.
It is only the politicians and police who can eradicate it. I mean if they become honest then and then alone the corruption can be finished in India. But if any one thinks that it can happen, he or she may be living in fools paradise.
The corruption in India can only go with the will of the Almighty. I think it needs no further elaboration.
